Our aging population & caring for THEM and their teeth

The global population continues to age, by 2030 one-sixth of the world’s population will be 60 year or older.  The amount of people aged 80 years and older is expected to triple between 2020 and 2050 reaching 426 million (WHO).  This trend calls for enhanced healthcare and dental care!  Many older adults have chronic health issues and experience compromised oral health, often due to inadequate oral care in the past.  With the mouth as the mirror of overall health older patients require more frequent periodic visits to the hygienist and dentist.

Chronic diseases of the oral cavity affecting older adults:

Dental infections

Caries

Tooth loss

Mucosal lesions

Oral Cancer

Dry mouth

Gum disease

These conditions can adversely affect nutrition, quality of life, self esteem and general health. Comprehensive review of chronic medications, medical history and existing conditions is crucial.  Studies find high associations between poor oral health and the progression to frailty, with edentulism (no teeth) in particular being associated with severe frailty.
