WHAT DOES AN Endodontist Do?
Endodontics focuses on treating the soft tissue, the nerve and pulp, inside the tooth. The word comes from “endo” (inside) and “dontics” (tooth).
An endodontist works alongside your general dentist to save teeth that would otherwise need to be removed. This work is handled by Dr. Anton Grotius, our resident endodontics specialist.
The treatment process involves:
- Removing the infected nerve or pulp from inside the tooth.
- Cleaning, disinfecting, filling, and sealing the canal to eliminate bacteria and prevent reinfection.
- Using a dental dam to isolate the tooth, which keeps the area clean during the procedure and reduces contamination.
Even without the nerve, a fully developed tooth can stay healthy because it continues to be supported by the surrounding tissues. That’s why a root canal is often the best option for saving a tooth, rather than extracting it.
