Hello

ORAL HYGIENIST

Hi there! I’m thrilled to share a little about myself with you. I earned my dental hygienist qualification from the University of Pretoria back in 2007. Since then, I’ve gained experience in orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and surgery.

One of the favourite aspects of my work is paying particular attention to detail and precision, whether in my career or everyday life. As a hygienist, I also pride myself on being a good listener and understanding each patient’s unique needs. There’s nothing more personally rewarding than helping someone achieve a healthy, confident smile.

In my free time, I have a passion for interior design, photography, outdoor activities, and travel. And, of course, I can’t forget to mention my two beloved children and dachshunds, who always bring a smile to my face!

WHAT DOES AN ORAL HYGIENIST DO?

An oral hygienist helps patients achieve and maintain oral health with the aim of preventing dental problems.

The process includes the following:

  1. Gums and periodontal tissues are assessed.
  2. Plaque is made visible so that you, as the patient, can see areas you miss, and the clinician can see where to clean.
  3. You, as the patient, are motivated and instructed on good oral hygiene techniques. The importance of prevention is emphasized.
  4. Plaque, stains and early calculus are removed with Airflow.
  5. Plaque is removed in 4-9mm pockets (if applicable) with Perioflow.
  6. The remaining calculus is removed above and below the gum line.
  7. A final check is done to ensure your mouth is clean and fluoride is applied.
  8. You are recalled to maintain healthy gums.

Additional things your hygienist might do can include screening for oral diseases, taking x-rays, clinical photographs, impressions and whitening teeth.

When should I see an Oral Hygienist?

Every 6 months

Or as recommended by your dental professional. An Oral Hygienist promotes good oral health. Prevention is better than cure. Visiting every six months ensures regular oral checks and clean teeth and gums will result in healthier teeth and gums and promotes a confident, fresh smile.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Any form of teeth whitening has the potential to cause temporary tooth sensitivity.

Any form of exposed dentine (cavities, decalcification, open tooth necks, grinded down teeth) is more prone to sensitivity. While whitening, great precaution is taken to limit sensitivity and products are carefully chosen according to your personal needs. Aftercare sensitivity treatments and advice is also provided.

What causes bad breath & how do you solve it?

The most common cause of bad breath (halitosis) is related to what you eat

or your dental hygiene habits. If you are not eating pungent foods (garlic, onions, curry, cabbage, etc.) and still have bad breath it may be that you are not brushing and flossing adequately. By not having tooth cavities filled, avoiding professional cleanings and check-ups at least once a year and you’re not brushing your tongue you are inviting gum and tooth disease as well as bad breath.
